In an interview given to UK-based EDGE magazine, Yerli claimed that the “creative expression” of Crytek, developers of the popular Crysis and Far Cry franchises, and other multi-platform developers is being limited by the continued prevalence of the consoles from Sony and Microsoft and that porting games from the PC to the consoles leaves the experience less than desirable on both sides. Yerli stated:
Furthermore Yerli added that multi-platform games cannot reach their technical potential because the current generation of consoles are almost a generation behind the cutting edge of PC gaming:
It’s easy to see why developers may become frustrated when developing for both the PC and consoles. The current tech inside an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is almost five years old whereas PC hardware is updated on an annual basis. The openness of the computer means that changes can be made simply and where needed and on consoles this isn’t the case. However, the popularity of consoles as a gaming platform almost requires PC game developers to design their products with the consoles in mind.
As was reported last week, even the PC-heavy developers such as Blizzard, have accepted that consoles play a big part in the development of games and the company is actively seeking to release Diablo 3 onto the platforms.
Do you agree with Yerli? Are you concerned that consoles are slowing down advances in game development?
Crytek is currently developing Crysis 2, which is expected to be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms in 2011.
